I didn't pick up on the home page part, so I thought "topic" meant the topics of the forum. Do they indeed have the exact same error msg for news links as they do for forum topics? I have NEVER seen a broken link from the news links, so I couldn't say what happens.

I assume that the links you refer to are the top-5 news articles on the Home page. Sometimes a news article is removed by the Mods because it does not meet GB guidelines but that is rare for the top-rated articles. I very rarely see a topic-not-available message.

Picky-assed objection: Your msg is not really a topic for the Suggest A Web Site Improvement category, because you are asking a question rather than suggesting an improvement. As such it would be suitable as a topic in the Talk Back To Us Category.
Smugly recited answer: Click Forum | Manage Ignored Members and un-ignore the members who penned the msg that was not available. Lesson 1: Topics in which an ignored member was the original poster (OP) will return the subject error msg whenever you try to access them. Lesson 2: Because GB does not ask "Are you sure?" whenever you change preferences that affect the way the site works for you, it is very easy to accidental modify your preferences unintentionally, say by mistakenly clicking an "Ignore Whathisname" button. Lesson 3: As the GB sites are beat to death on a daily basis, most of the bugs have been discovered. So, when something whack happens, it is more likely* that just you don't understand what is going on rather than it is that you have run up against an undiscovered bug. Further, when you do bump up a seemingly undiscovered bug, it is likely that the system behaves the way it does because that is simply the way things work for one reason or another (whether intentionally designed or not) and it is not likely to change, in which case you must live with it.
There, you have been pumped full of optimism at practically no cost.
----- *Unless it has to do with new mobile devices or other similarly recently-released features.
