if they streak it's time to change them. weather conditions have a big effect on them. always keep your windshield clean and they will last longer. if you're up north in snow and ice country, clean all the ice before you turn the wipers on. also sometimes they just need a cleaning with some water and vinegar.

Every couple of years or so.
I keep a squeegee/sponge in my car and use it with a spray bottle of windshield cleaner to clear the windshield of dirt, bug splatter, etc, etc, etc… as often as I can and it has helped to extend the life of the blades. Bought my GT Stang new in 2005 and, after 6 years, the blades are just now beginning to streak so I’m going to have to replace them soon.

I use Aquapel on my windshield and seldom use the wipers. Due to the sun, I replace the blades once a year.

If they don't clean well, I clean the blades.

If the blades look worn, I change them.

I found it best to change my wiper blades at the same time my state inspection sticker is due to be renewed December weather they need it or not. They get replaced. Then I know i'm good through Spring, Summer & the Fall.

I agree, rain-x is great stuff. But only if your able to get it applied correctly. I usually swap out my wipers when I'm better off not turning them on.

Replace them when you notice that they aren't as efficient as they were
when new or when they start squeaking when wiping the moisture from
the screen.

once a year- if you take the windshield washer thing at the gas station and scrub your blades - or use the harsh side of a dish sponge - all that crap will come off and your blades will be like new
