Well there are some unnamed parameters that are significant to this equation. First are there other passengers... if so is the car full or is it half full. Third how much luggage is being taken... in the car... in the trunk... How many passengers can drive... and Lastly how long a stay will it be...
Worst case scenario... BIG ROOMY VEHICLE... NO BRAINER. Best case scenario...Cramped Econo Car... Anything in between... BIG ROOMY VEHICLE.
I am not traveling that distance and take a chance I might develop muscle soreness or a back ache for the saving of a few bucks... If I have to see the doctor... then I've spent more than in the Gas Queen total!

Tough choice- most likely I would go with the cramped econo car if there aren't a lot of people in the car with me or if it's just me driving. However, if it was a family trip or for some other reason, I had a lot of people in my car, I might not have a choice but to go with the roomy car with poor mileage.

In driving that distance, you have to be comfortable - or else you are a liability on the roads.

Bad question! I drive a Camry that gets over 30mpg on the highway. It's not cramped and it doesn't get poor gas mileage.

I'd have to go with a big roomy vehicle with poor gas mileage. I don't think I could see myself sacrificing my comfort for 1,000 miles crammed in a Geo/Yugo/Chevette just to save a few pennies on better gas mileage. I'd consider it provided the trip were much shorter-maybe like 10 miles or so.

If the object was to get there as quick as possible, economy wins every time. For a vacation or something else that takes time, big will do.

I would probably suffer it out in a cramped economy car, as long as I were by myself and did not have to listen to anybody else complain.

Depends on the trip. To get to a destination in a hurry - economy. To camp or recreate on a long trip, big and roomy would be more necessary.

I am going to have to say, at the risk of being unpopular, the cramped econo car with great gas mileage. Last time we took a Hyundai Sonata and it was sufficient. The trunk held everything we needed it to for a 12-day trip.
